Scotty Anderson is the improviser par de excellence. Mr Dykes can play what he works out in advance incredibly well. I think anything Chet oriented, they are about neck and neck on...but Scotty leaves'em in the dust when the chord changes start flying...I am pretty sure about that one.

If you haven't heard SCOTTY ANDERSON yet...you are going to be in for a surprise. Scotty was doing this before Doyle and Doyle probably learned a lot from Scotty. Check him out!

Ever heard of Tommy Emmanuel!? If not check him out, he's one of the greatest guitarists out there today! He has actually recorded with Chet Atkins and Chet himself awarded him as a "C.G.P." (Certified Guitar Player) for his contribution to the art of fingerstyle. I like Doyle too, he's also a great guitarist!

Ahem....Mark Knopfler may be the only person other than Doyle who deserves to be mentioned in the same company as Chet Atkins and Merle Travis. Go check out any Chet Atkins + Mark Knopfler "neck and neck" video, and you'll see what I mean!

Chet and Merle laid the groundwork for all other guitarists. They are the pioneers and all others have gained knowledge from these two. However Doyle and others have clearly raised the bar in ability...Without Chet and Merle laying the foundation, Doyle, Tommy would not be where they are now...Needless to say fingerstyle playing has just been elevated by these new greats...!

Tommy is flat out today's best guitar picker in the world. Nobody can match the reperotoire, improvisation or stage persona. However, Doyle easily is America's best guitarist in some time although he does more patterns than I'd expect at this talent level. Chet still is the defacto-standard as the best guitarist ever as he really only had one primary source, Merle Travis and Jerry Reed for influences where Tommy and Doyle both have benefited from Chet's massive recording library and others.

dont forget Scotty Anderson....he may have a new cd coming out....just to dispel the myth that he is not a top picker...

Agreed. I haven't heard near as much of Doyle's music as I have of Tommy's, but from what I have heard I'd say Doyle's either equal with Chet or pretty darn close. But like I said, I haven't heard many of his tunes. Either way, he is an excellent guitarist and among my favorites :)
